DISC DRYER FOR WET DISTILLERS SPENT GRAIN

DISC DRYER FOR WET DISTILLERS SPENT GRAIN

WHAT IS THE MEANING OF DDGS?

DDGS or Dried Distillers Grains with Solubles. It is a dried stillage with soluble substances. Stillage is a residue from the manufacture of ethanol from grain obtained by the drying process to required moisture content. Drying of brewery and distillery waste provides nutritional value and high protein content dry matter which can be used in the food industry. The amount of waste, produced by the brewery and distillery industry, is about 85% of all residues generated in brewers' spent grain industry.

There are also many other terms: dried grain stillage, distillation dried grain, brewery spent, spent grain, wet brewers grains, and because corn grain is most often used as raw material, there is also the name dried corn spent grain. DDGS is a by-product of the spirit industry, generated in the production of food spirit or bioethanol used as an additive to fuels. In simplified terms, it can be said that the grain mash remaining after the fermentation and distillation of ethyl alcohol is thickened and then dried. DDGS is made from raw materials such as corn, wheat, barley, rye, and triticale. The finished DDGS is in the form of loose, flakes or pellets.

WHAT IS THE MEANING OF DDG?

DDG or dried distillers grains that are dried stillage with soluble substances is an excellent element of fodder intended for feeding farm animals. Obtained as a by-product in the production of ethyl alcohol or bioethanol, it is subject to appropriate processing and drying. In terms of protein and energy content, the differences between DDGS and DDG are not significant, while DDGS contains more phosphorus and fat. As a consequence, there is no standardized quality for distillates, but it is necessary for the producer to specify the composition of the product and its feed suitability.

WHAT ARE DDG AND DDGS USED FOR?

Dried distillers grains with solubles (DDGS) and dried distillers grains (DDG) can be converted by thermal drying into valuable high protein by-products. DDGS can be used as a solid fuel for energy production or in the animal feed industry as a high-protein supplement. It is a perfect and efficient alternative and soybean-based to corn animal feed. Proteins in DDGS, due to their high energy content, are an excellent component (usually up to 20%) of nutrient mixtures for all animal species. Compared to maize grain, DDGS has a higher calcium, phosphorus, and sulfur content. DDGS can be an alternative to post-extraction rapeseed meal or cake, dried spent grain, and even post-extraction soybean meal, all the more that the rumen non-degradable protein constitutes about 55% of the total protein. Due to its high-fat content, it is also a magnificent energy feed for fattened cattle.

TG-Machines is delivering disc dryers for drying and turning spent grains into valuable market feed products. For each project, we approach individually in order to achieve the best quality products and energy-efficient system. Our disc dryers can recover effectively protein by-products from breweries and distilleries.
