WHAT IS MEAT RENDERING?

Meat rendering is a process that changes animal waste into useable, valuable materials. Rendering is referring to whole animal fatty tissue into purified fats like tallow or lard. Rendering is carried out on an industrial scale. Animal waste products come from slaughterhouses, grocery stores as expired meat, and butcher shop trimmings. Rendering material includes entire carcasses of animals from slaughterhouses and those that have died on farms or in transit, bones, offal, and fatty tissue. The most popular animal waste products are pork, poultry, beef, and mutton. The rendering relies on drying and separating the bones and protein from fat. The meat utilization produces a fat-like yellow grease, white grease, tallow, and protein meat meals like meat meal, meat and bone meal, bone meal, blood meal, feather meal, and poultry meal. In the rendering plants, often other materials are processed like feathers, hair, and blood.

In Europe, animal by-products are divided into 3 categories according to their demonstrated level of health risk.

• Category 1 material - dangerous for the environment and those that pose a prion infection risk to humans
• Category 2 material - associated with human health hazards other than prions or contaminated with chemicals
• Category 3 material - healthy animals and carcasses, fit for human consumption after the sanitary examination

WHAT IS MEAT AND BONE MEAL USED FOR?

Only category III materials are allowed for the production of animal meal feed. Meat and bone meal is used for the production of soil improvers, organic fertilizers, and for energy purposes. Bone meal is used as an organic fertilizer because it contains a high level of valuable ingredients like phosphorus, nitrogen, and calcium. In recent years, power stations have been utilized meat and bone meal as a source of alternative renewable energy. It has a high caloric value and can be used for energy production.
